Leather Coral

Sarcophyton alcyonidae

This Gold Crowned Toadstool leather coral is a farmed coral, meaning that it was grown by someone, rather than harvested from the ocean. It's done very well in my tank. If you notice what looks like a string on the left-hand portion, that is a baby brittle-star!  Also note the purple and green coralline algae on the rock behind the coral.

This is an extremely hardy coral which can grow quite large.  It is tolerant of a variety of conditions but prefers good light and low to medium water flow.

This is the smaller of the 2 shown above. I separated them and placed the smaller one in the 120 gallon reef in 2002. This is it now, in 2006. I guess it's happy! The clownfish thinks it's an anemone and is very territorial of it - here, he is chasing off the damsel that got too close.
